When Should You Have Breast Exams?

Breast ExamEffective screening for breast cancer has three parts:

  1. Clinical examination by a gynecologist, family doctor or nurse practitioner
  2. Mammogram
  3. Breast self-exam (BSE)

Combining all three gives you the best chance of identifying most cancers at their earliest, most treatable stages.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women under age 40:

  • Perform monthly breast self-examinations
  • Have a breast examination by a health care professional every three years

Women age 40 and over should:

  • Perform monthly self-exams
  • Have a breast exam by a health care professional every year
  • Have a mammogram every year

These are recommendations for women with no history of breast cancer and no breast symptoms. If you have a family or personal history, have breast pain or feel a lump, talk to your doctor.

Ask Our Expert
Q: I heard the FDA recently approved a drug, Evista, to reduce the risk for breast cancer-is that true? Who can benefit from this medication?
A: Yes, in September the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Evista (the brand name for raloxifene previously used to treat osteoporosis) to help prevent breast cancer in postmenopausal women who are at high-risk for the disease.

My Story
I wouldn’t have to lose my breast.
“Saving my life was the most important thing to me. But it was very appealing when Dr. Harper said I wouldn’t have to lose my breast.”
